An exciting book that I have read is the Lonely Planet, which is a very popular and informative traveling book in the world.

The first time I read it was during the last Christmas. I saw an advertisement about this book series, and immediately bought it on JD Read, which is an online book selling platform. It was a must for me during that time because I wanted it to be my helpful tour guide when I was traveling around New Zealand.

I thought this book was quite worthwhile reading, because there’s not only a lot of vivid pictures and maps which indicated some cultural aspects about New Zealand, but also provided up some up-to-date contact information of so many awesome hotels, cafeterias and museums, etc.

What made me feel very excited about this book was that it enabled me to find a very wonderful and quiet resort that was not known to most travels in New Zealand. This resort had first class service, and provided us tasty breakfast without charge. This place also allowed me to make some Maori friends who taught me a lot useful Maori expressions. I spend my most memorable two weeks there during the whole last year.

I am reading How to win friends and influence people recently and I love that. It is one ofthe first best-selling self-help books ever published, written by Dale Carnegie.

How to win friends and influence people firsttells us that 15 percent of one's success is dueto technical knowledge. However, 85 percent is due to skill in human engineering -- personalityand the ability to lead people. And then the book is like a practical methodology introduces theways of how to handle people and interact with each other.

I like to read those self-help books because they encourage me a lot and remind me ofmistakes I have made in daily life and help me works effectively on human relations. Moreover, those books are not based on dry theory, but on the experiences of the writer and shortstories of famous people from different area who are politicians, writers and leaders incompanies. Their stories make the book more fun and persuasive.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about a book that had a major influence on me. I am going to tell you the name of the book and the author, what I remember of it and why it is so significant to me.

Funnily enough, I was thinking about this book only the other day. It is called ‘The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse’, I don’t know why I remembered it suddenly, but I had to google to look up the author. It is by Ursula Moray Williams, but I didn’t know that when I first read it.

As to how I first heard of the book, I can’t really say! It is actually a children’s book, and I think it must have been chosen for me by my parents as I don’t remember actually buying it with anyone, and I don’t think it was a birthday gift or it would have had an inscription in its front cover. The copy I had was a rather tatty paperback with an orange cover and published by a then famous book company called Puffin Books. It had a picture of crudely fashioned toy wooden horse on the front. The horse had a cylindrical body and straight legs fastened onto a board with four wheels on it. The horse had a flowing mane and tail, and in my copy was facing away from the reader, heading off on its’ adventures.

The story was so very sad! The horse in the title was a toy horse originally supposed to be sold by his maker. The little wooden horse is very loyal and wants only to stay with his Uncle Peder who crafted him. However, sadly the toymaker is forced out of business as mass produced toys become available, and the little wooden horse sets out to try and make his fortune so the two of them can stay together. Terrible things happen to the horse, he is sometimes lonely and unhappy. Eventually, though, he does make his fortune 【I can’t remember how】 and returns home only to find the toymaker has vanished! It is heart-breaking. In the end, the little wooden horse and the toy maker are reunited by chance and there is at last a happy ending after a harrowing set of adventures.

The reason this book is important to me is because it is the first book I remember really wanting to read for myself. My mum and dad would take turns to read me just one chapter at night, but there were lots and lots of chapters – about twenty I think, and I was so upset not knowing how the story would end if one chapter was finished and the poor little wooden horse was left in distress! I could read a bit, but not that well, and not well enough to read silently in my head.

Anyway, one night, after my parents had closed the book and left me alone, I carried on reading all by myself. I had to read out loud, and the story was so sad I was sobbing as I read, which made it even harder for me to get the words out and finish the story. Even so, I carried on reading right to the end and fortunately the story did end happily! I can still remember this, even though I must have only been about four years old at the time. My parents remember the episode too. They could hear me in my room reading aloud and crying, and they said it was heart-rending to listen to, but also quite impressive, as I was so stubbornly determined to do this, and on my own.

I have never re-read the book as an adult. I’m afraid if I did and found it wasn’t really very good or very well written it might spoil the memory for me. I prefer to imagine it as the most brilliant story ever written even if that isn’t true at all! So the book is special because it is probably the book that encouraged me to read, as well as being probably my earliest memory.

Describe a book you want to read again

You should say:

What the book is about

Why you read it

What you learned from this book

And explain why you would like to read it again.

Ok, well after a bit of thought, I’ve decided that the book I’d like to talk about is one called Think Like DaVinci, as it's definitely a book I would like to read again at some point, for reasons I'll come on to shortly. But firstly though, with regard to what the book’s about, well in a nutshell, it basically explains how all of us have thecapability and potential to become a genius, like DaVinci. And it outlines a few various things that he used to do, which we can also get into the habit of doing. So essentially, it puts forward some ideas on how we can all live to our full potential. Anyway, as for what made me read it, well if my memory serves me correctly, I wasbrowsing around in my local bookshop one day, and the book's cover kind of just caught my eye when I saw the name DaVinci written in bold letters. So I read a few pages to see if it was any good, and ended up buying it.

I should also mention the fact that I'm quite a big fan of self-help books, because on the whole, I tend to learn quite a lot from them, and this book was definitely no exception. Just to give you an example, I would say I've learned to become much more observant after reading this book, such as generally paying more attention to everything around me. And in so doing, it’s made me appreciate things a lot more. Of course, there were a number of other things I learned, but nothing else is coming to mind right now, and that's really kind of why I want to read the book again, because I've forgotten a lot of it. So I kind of need to refresh my memory a little bit!
