Describe a car journey you went on

You should say:

where you went

when and why you went there

what landscapes you saw

and explain why this was such an unforgettable trip

Last week, I had a great car journey from Austin to Dallas. I started from Austin for Dallas which was 195 miles away. It was a pleasant journey for me after long days. Thank you so much for the interesting question. I will answer it in brief.

It was the birthday of my friends, Jimmy. He planned for the trip with his own car that he received from his father marking his 19th birthday. He planned to thank his dad for driving the car to his home in Dallas. In fact, he is a student of architecture and we are in the same university in Austin in the USA. It was a rapid plan and we four started for Dallas.

Dallas is around 195 miles from Austin but the distance is a bit reduced lower from the area of our university from where we started for. It took around four hours for us to reach Dallas and another half an hour to reach Jimmy’s home. So, it took five hours altogether for us to reach there. But it was an enjoyable journey. We all had fun during the trip. Luckily, the roads were almost empty as it was a holiday. But it took a long time for us to reach there as we stopped in several places and took snacks and beverages.

I was accompanied with three other people including Jimmy. He was my best friend and thus he asked me to comment on his plan to visit his parents on his birthday. Jimmy was surprised with the car that his father had sent for him and was delivered at night. So, he planned to surprise them to be there and a have a lunch on the day. After the plan, we moved there. Samuel, Jimmy, Rupert and I was the member of this trip. Jimmy was an excellent driver but I had no idea that he could drive so well. He never crossed the speed limit despite having the chances. He also forbade us not to take any alcoholic beverages during the ride.

I went there by car mostly based on the request made by Jimmy. I agreed with him for some reasons. I have just completed a semester and the classes for the new semester was yet to begin. So, life was boring and I could not focus on other entertaining activities. The proposal was very charming and I instantly agreed with Jimmy. I also assumed that the journey would be interesting as two of our best friends were going too. Finally, we made the journey by car and really enjoyed to the last moment. I am grateful to Jimmy for offering such a nice trip.

1. How would you define the word, success?

How to measure a person's success? What kind of person would you consider successful?

Undoubtedly, different person holds different views about success. I guess the majority people would consider success equal money, fame, reputation, and high social status. But I do know some people who pursue different kinds of things, for example, some scholars, they would regard the success as one tiny bit of development in knowing more about the world, in exploring more about the knowledge boundary of human beings. For me, one common creature of a million, I think success means going to bed with this sense of achievement and fulfillment every single day.

Do you think you are a successful person?

Well, I have to say i feel I am very successful because my life is on track, and though I have not achieved as much as I would like to have achieved, I am still contented with what I HAVE done. You know, I have been to many countries, and seen lots of the world; I could play a little bit guitar, dance a little tango. Though I haven't made a lot money, but I feel spiritual success, and I guess that's especially important in today's materialistic world.

2. Has the meaning of success changed in your country in recent years?

No, I wouldn't say that. As you know, the community we live today shares the same value. Money and fame equal success. The symbols of success might have changed over the years, but the essence remains the same. For example, in the past, professions like doctors, teachers, and public servants are highly respected and regarded as successful while nowadays, anyone with money will be considered successful. The usual token of that is big house, luxury cars and so on. I guess, that does not change at all.

In you society, how is a person's status evaluated?

Well, generally speaking, a person's status is evaluated by his achievement in his/her particular career or field. For example, we could say a writer is successful if his works is well recognized by readers and even get some international rewards, such as Nobel Prize for literature. Also if he or she, through hardworking, creates a large amount of wealth, that is also another standard to evaluate his/her status.

A plan in your life话题

A plan in your life

【that is not related to work or study】

You should say:

What it was about

When you made it

How it worked

And how you felt about the result

Well, to be honest, I’ve got to say it’s a pretty difficult topic for me, cause you might not know this, but most of the time, it’s my mom who does all the planning for me, especially when it is study related. So if I’ve got to choose a plan of mine and tell you a little bit about it, perhaps I can just bring up the one I did for my trip to Sri Lanka.

In fact, way before last year, I bought Lonely Planet Sri Lanka when it was on sale, you know, it’s a guide book. They do all sorts of destinations. And then there was this one day, I realized that edition I had been having was going out of date soon, cause I saw the new version was coming out soon. So I thought it was time to plan a trip soon. You might not know this but normally I would love to go somewhere totally on my own. By accident one of my friends heard about my idea and she said she wanted to join me. So I booked our tickets and the hotel for the first night. We didn’t choose to go with a guided tour group, so we had to do a lot of research online before hand. Luckily I found a good website called tripadvisor which gave me all sorts of information I was desperate to know.

This Chinese New Year, we finally made it to Colombo, which is the capital. Even now, I’m feeling so lucky that I came up with the idea of travelling cause I really had a blast on that beautiful island. What I liked the best was the trip was quite spontaneous. I didn’t make any specific route before hand, so we were just following our heart the whole time. Apart from that, thank god, I checked the weather and that and successfully avoided the north which was pissing down at the time. Where we went, which is along the southwest coast, was sunny throughout the whole journey. Still though, there was something I didn’t arrange too perfectly. I didn’t pre book the hotels so when we got to each new city, we had to look for one ourselves, and the prices were relatively high as well. If I didn’t spend that much money, I would have probably stayed a bit longer. At the same time, my friend who went along seemed to enjoy herself just as much. Anyway, I think I might crack on a new plan for the next journey hopefully really soon.

Describe an important historical event in your country.

You should say:

What the event was

when it happened

How you heard about it

And explain why this historical event is important.

The founding of the People’s Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution

改革开放:the Reform and opening up

It’s definitely the reform and opening up initiated by Deng Xiaoping soon after the end of the Cultural Revolution, which, I think is also very important but no match of this one. Anyway, the cultural revolution ended in 1976, and the reform and opening up was initiated in 1978. Of course I, like many other young people in China have learned, systematically a lot from our textbooks. But I didn’t realize its importance until I have read so many reports and books from various channels, some of them are from famous historians now living and teaching in American or British universities. Therefore the bulk of my understanding of it definitely comes from their reports, lectures, etc.

First of all, I want to put the reform and opening up back to the grand narrative of China since 3000 years ago when China first got its name The Empire of the Middle. Ancient Chinese believed that China, or my country, located at the center of the world. Well, this was a narrative, or legend, once held by many nations at the very beginning. However, due to the geopolitical uniqueness, China maintained this legend until the late 19th century when the British Empire and other modern countries invaded China since the 1840s. In no more than 20 years the legend was replaced by one miserable story after another of occupations, of exploitation, of territorial secession. And this strong sense of inferiority lasted for almost eighty or ninety years, until 1949 when Communist party brought the nation together again. And we used another three years to reach a peace deal the the United States in North Korea, and then its the Cultural Revolution. All those events caused a big problem of national identity: who are we? What’s the position of China in the world? We asked ourselves questions like this at that time. So there came Deng Xiaoping, a man who once studied in France in his early twenties. He opened the gate of China. He showed the Chinese people that we had been left behind by western countries. He told us, in an indirect way that our governance was not that successful compared to our capitalist enemies. So, what he did basically was to relocate China in this small planet.

The second reason, of course, is China’s economy. Back in 1978, when China’s top leaders were trying their best to dispose of the problems left by the Cultural Revolution, and nobody knows where China should go. It was Deng Xiaoping pointed out the way and said the economic development is the top task and the reform and opening up solved the problem of how to develop economy. And within ten years, well, twenty years, by the end of 1998, China’s economy was beyond anybody’s imagination. The key point is, no great public turmoil happened in these twenty years, I think this is the importance of the Reform and the Opening up.
