1. Do you ever ride a bicycle?

Yeah I do, but not that much anymore, because I’m living on campus at the moment. So everything’s pretty close to me, and I don’t really need a bike to get around.

2. How old were you when you first learned to ride a bicycle?

It was quite a while ago – let me have a little think! Um……I suppose I must have been about 5 or 6 when I first learned, but I honestly couldn’t tell you for sure, because I

simply can’t remember! But I think I was pretty small, so five or six sounds about right.

3. Are bicycles popular in China?

Yes they are. They’re incredibly popular! You know, if you go out onto any street in China, the chances are you’ll see a lot of bikes. And I guess the reason for this is that they’re the cheapest way to get around, apart from walking of course, but that’s a lot slower!

4. Would you say it’s difficult to learn to ride a bicycle?

Well I think it’s like everything really, in the sense that when you start off learning, it feels extremely difficult, but the more you practice, the easier it gets. So yeah, I guess it is a little difficult to begin with, but it doesn’t take long to get the hang of.

5. What kinds of people ride bicycles?

Wow, you know it’s pretty hard to generalize, because I think all kinds of people ride bicycles, at least here in China anyway! So to be a bit more specific, you see young children riding their bikes around their neighbourhood, and then older children riding to school. And as for adults, I think a lot of them will ride their bikes to work if they don’t have too far to travel. And the middle-aged and elderly also like cycling, as it’s good exercise for them and a cheap way to get around. So yeah, I think it’s fair to say that all ages of people ride bicycles, apart from the very young and very old. 6. Would you say it’s safe to ride a bicycle in the city?

On the whole, I’d say it is, yeah, as long as you cycle carefully of course! Because what’s good is that in most cities here, there are separate bike lanes for cyclists to use, which makes it a lot safer.

You should say:

When and where you had the trip

Who you went with

Why you had the trip by bike

And explain how you felt about it.

Last summer, I went on a trip with my friend in the city. We just got one day off from work, so we decided to do something interesting. We rent a tandem bike at the beach, a kind of bike built for two people to ride together. It wasn’t expensive at all, and just cost 30 yuan per hour. We wanted to ride along the beach, and a tandem bike was a perfect choice since we could ride it together, and hopefully, make the trip less tiring.

It was our first time to ride a tandem bike. I was the front rider, and my friend was the rear rider. I was in charge of steering and pedaling, while my friend was in charge of pedaling and navigating. Both of us were very nervous because we couldn’t find the balance, and almost fell to the ground for several times. Fortunately, we cooperated well, and soon find the key to riding it. Then we started to enjoy the magnificent view of the sea and the beach.

As we expected, the trip was very enjoyable. While riding the tandem, we could feel the gentle breeze on our faces. The pace of life slowed down, and it was the moment for us to feel the beauty of life. When we climbed up a slope, we pedaled quickly. When we went down a slope, we couldn’t hold our excitement and shouted loudly. Also, as the rear rider who didn’t need to steer, my friend took many photos on the trip.

Although the trip just lasted for about 2 hours, we really enjoyed ourselves.

Do you ever ride a bicycle?

I ride my bicycle all the time, and I absolutely love it. I have loved riding bicycles since the age of 7 when I got my first brand new red bike and could ride without the help of a parent or stabilisers.

How popular are bicycles in your hometown? Why?

Bicycles are reasonably popular in my hometown, but there are very few cyclists on the roads there, in comparison to major cities like Beijing. Though the distances are shorter, there aren’t so many cyclists there. I think this is a result of the infrastructure; the roads in Beijing are much better and therefore safer for cyclists than in my hometown.

How often do you ride a bicycle? Why? /Why not?

Now that I live in Beijing, I ride a bicycle every day. I recently bought an expensive, very fast bike after I realized that a good bike could save me money on my daily commute to work, and now I get there just as quickly as using a subway, but I also get to be outside in the fresh air, with regular exercise built into my daily routine.

Do you think that bicycles are suitable for all ages? Why? /Why not?

I think kids should learn to ride bicycles as soon as they are big enough to use one. Parents who delay teaching their children to ride a bicycle for whatever reason are doing a huge disservice to their children.

What are the advantages of a bicycle compared to a car? Why?

Though I like driving, I much prefer cycling for several reasons. Firstly, bicycles get through traffic while cars get stuck in traffic jams. This is particularly prevalent in cities, where rush hour causes huge problems for commuters every day of the week. Secondly, I try to be environmentally conscious wherever I can, so I prefer not to use a gas-guzzling vehicle whenever I have the chance. Plus, that way I don’t have to pay the high rates for petrol!

The table compares the numbers of people who cycled to work in twelve areas of the UK in the years 2001 and 2011.

Overall, the number of UK commuters who travelled to work by bicycle rose considerably over the 10-year period. Inner London had by far the highest number of cycling commuters in both years.

In 2001, well over 43 thousand residents of inner London commuted by bicycle, and this figure rose to more than 106 thousand in 2011, an increase of 144%. By contrast, although outer London had the second highest number of cycling commuters in each year, the percentage change, at only 45%, was the lowest of the twelve areas shown in the table.

Brighton and Hove saw the second biggest increase 【109%】 in the number of residents cycling to work, but Bristol was the UK’s second city in terms of total numbers of cycling commuters, with 8,108 in 2001 and 15,768 in 2011. Figures for the other eight areas were below the 10 thousand mark in both years.
