在过去的英文：in the past。in the past+一段时间名词应该用现在完成时【以现在时间为基准】;或用过去完成时【以过去时间为基准】。

in the past的用法

1、假如是用作时间状语，可连用一般过去时或现在完成时，两者的区别是：用一般过去时，客观地叙述过去的状况;用现在完成时，强调持续到现在的状态或对现在影响。

例句:

In the past he had to read by candlelight.

过去他只得在烛光下攻读。

I’ve been there many times in the past.

我从前去过那儿许多次。

2、假如是用于名词后作定语，句子时态可通过状况选用。

例句:

He could remember events far back in the past.

他能记得很早以前的事情。

He will never forget his miserable childhood in the past.

他永远也忘不了自身过去的悲惨的童年。
